According to the exit polls Obama got 43% of the White vote. That’s not a majority but keep in mind that more White folks typically vote Republican than Democrat regardless of the race of the candidates so how does this number compare to previous elections?
It seems that White voters voting Democrat is pretty consistent regardless of race. If the caller’s statement is correct then racism has been over for quite a long time. One interesting thing about these numbers though is that, except for Bill’s 73% of the Hispanic vote in 1996, Obama won every non-white category by at least 5 percentage points over his predecessors. Bill may have beaten Obama among Hispanics by 6 but Obama beat Bill among Asians by 18.So, what does all this mean? It looks like White voters vote more along party lines and ideology than color barriers. Thus, contrary to popular belief in the media racism has been over for a long time. It looks like White voters wouldn’t have made the difference in either an Obama victory or defeat. It was the non-white voters that turned the tide on this election. Fascinating.
